Pumping out sewage in a private home – all the methods in one article

Photo: Sewage pumping in a private homeEvery resident of a country house wants to use clean water not only for drinking, but also for household needs.

Human economic activity pollutes the environment, pollutes septic tanks, and overflows sewers. Therefore, periodic sewer pumping in a private home is not only inevitable but also essential.

Pumping it out may not be necessary if the sewer system is connected to the city system, but in our conditions this is very rare for a private country house.

Methods for pumping out sewage in a private home

Let us clarify that we will be talking about the sewerage of household and fecal wastewater, without mixing it with the problem of stormwater removal.

While the second task is related solely to combating excessive soil moisture on the site, the solution to the first task will determine the supply of high-quality water and the creation of conditions for a healthy lifestyle.

These wastewaters are typically saturated with various bacteria and chemical contaminants, which can poison clean groundwater sources.

Automatic sewage pumping in a private home – using a sludge pump, hydrodynamic cleaning and vacuum pumping

Please note! Currently, sanitary regulations prohibit the use of cesspools for the accumulation of human waste, but there are still enough of them in use that the issue remains relevant.

Photo: A cesspool on a summer cottage plotThree types of modern equipment are used to pump out the contents of septic tanks and cesspools:

  1. Calling a self-contained vacuum truck is an inexpensive and fairly effective method for not only pumping out the contents but also removing sediment from the bottom of a cesspool or septic tank. This procedure helps restore the soil's absorption and filtering capacity. A vacuum truck is the only way to clean a cesspool constructed without reinforcing the walls with brickwork or other methods. A vacuum truck should be used on septic tanks with a protected bottom or cesspools with a concrete bottom; otherwise, filter media will get caught in the pump.
  2. Hydrodynamic cleaning is performed using a jet of water under pressure, which allows for high-quality cleaning of walls from solid, adhered dirt.
  3. Vacuum evacuation allows you to clean the tank in minutes, leaving no residue or odors. This method incurs the most significant costs.

Fecal wastewater is often contaminated with large particles that can clog the pipe and impede the absorption of the pumped substance. To prevent this, a grinder is installed at the inlet to break up large particles in the flow.

The use of biologically active substances - chemical pumping of sewage

The disinfection of septic tank contents is also carried out using chemicals.Their action is based on the neutralization of biologically active substances and the oxidation of fecal matter.

As a result of this treatment, most of the wastewater becomes a liquid, more easily permeating and filtering through the soil. This treatment significantly reduces the need for sewer pumping in a private home.

Using biochemical treatment methods may eliminate the need for pumping altogether. This is possible in the following cases:

  • the septic tank is installed on a suburban area with periodic visits;
  • the cesspool is used only for fecal waste, storm water and household waste are discharged separately;
  • The pit must have a significant volume and cross-sectional dimensions so that the runoff has time to filter into the ground.

If these conditions are not met, biochemical methods can only increase the frequency of pumping, but it will not be possible to completely abandon it.

Photo - means for treating fecal waste in septic tanks

Strictly speaking, treatment with biochemical materials is not pumping. It simply changes the physical state and consistency of the wastewater. The resulting mass acquires many useful properties as a fertilizer and is successfully used in gardening and horticulture.

Modern septic tanks also use aeration of the wastewater by blowing it through with an air stream. The increased oxygen concentration in the liquid stream leads to accelerated oxidation of waste products in the fecal matter, promoting faster purification.

This process is called aeration and involves the use of an air compressor.

Pumping out sewage in a private home using a mechanical method - we will consider two options

An alternative to pumping using the methods described above is the use of mechanical devices. There are only two of them. Let's take a closer look at them.

An old-fashioned way of emptying a cesspool

This method of emptying a cesspool involves scooping out its contents with a bucket attached to a rope or pole. The work is slow, dirty, and foul-smelling.

Moreover, it only makes sense if there's a waste disposal site nearby. Furthermore, a closed container will be needed to transport the pumped-out contents of the septic tank.

Pumping using pumps of various modifications. Pumping algorithm

The second method is to use a pump. Various types of units can be used.

  • Sewage in a private home can be pumped out using a surface pump installed outside, directly next to the septic tank or cesspool. Only the suction hose is immersed in the tank. Solid particles in the pumped material should not be larger than 5 millimeters, so a filter screen with an appropriate mesh size is installed on the suction hose. Advantages of surface pumps include portability, light weight, ease of installation, a macerator, and air cooling.

  • A semi-submersible pump, the motor is located above the drain level (on a platform), and the pump itself is submerged within the liquid layer. It is equipped with a float switch. The maximum solids size is 50 millimeters.

  • A submersible pump can be used to pump out sewage in a private home. Despite their significantly higher cost, they are the most popular choice for this purpose. These units reach a power of up to 40 kW and a lifting height of 40 meters. They are equipped with macerators and float switches, allowing them to be used in automatic mode.

These units are also equipped with grinders, which allows them to be used for working with heavily contaminated liquids with large inclusions.

The safe operation of the device is ensured by an automatic liquid level control system.

Do-it-yourself sewer pumping – preparatory work

This operation is necessary, first and foremost, to ensure the proper functioning of the device itself. Delays in performing this operation can lead to the accumulation of silt, which over time hardens, turning into heavy, solid clay.

Such a substance can only be removed mechanically, and the labor intensity of such work is very high.

Photo – DIY sewer pumpingUnder normal conditions, after pumping out the bulk of the liquid, the sludge can be washed away with a pressurized water jet and the resulting slurry pumped out with a sludge or sewage pump. After this, the sewer pipes are inspected and, if necessary, flushed or mechanically cleaned.

When planning to put your drainage system in order, you need to consider the following questions:

  1. It is necessary to determine in advance the location of waste storage for removal.
  2. Prepare a container of sufficient capacity to pump out the septic tank's contents. Keep in mind that, in addition to the septic tank itself, you will also need to pump out the flush water from flushing out the sludge and cleaning the sewer pipes. The sewer pumping container must be hermetically sealed to prevent liquid from spilling during transport.
  3. Decide on the necessary equipment for pumping out the waste – select and purchase a pump, as well as auxiliary equipment and pipe cleaning tools. Please note that you may not need to purchase a pump; you can rent one on a daily basis for the duration of the work.
  4. Pumping out the contents of a septic tank is associated with the formation of unpleasant odors, sometimes very strong (It is possible to make a sewer system without pumping at all). Therefore, it is better to send family members living in the house somewhere far away.

Step-by-step process for pumping out water yourself

Photo – a device for hydrodynamic cleaning of a drain pipe in a private houseWe have already discussed the pumping equipment that can be used for this purpose.

The choice depends on the texture of the product being pumped and many other factors, including the distance of the septic tank from the entrance – the pump must have sufficient pressure to pump the thick substance over a long distance.

A grinder offers additional options for pumping. The more frequently you clean your septic tank, the easier and faster it is.

After the bulk of the sewage has been pumped out, the septic tank bottom is flushed and mechanically cleaned of sludge deposits. These are mixed into a pile and shoveled into a bucket. The tank is then flushed again, and the flushing fluid is pumped out.

Next, you need to inspect the drain pipe; its internal clearance is often significantly reduced due to debris stuck to the walls. Various means, including special hydrodynamic devices, are used to remove this debris.

How much does the pumping service cost?

Now let's look at the potential cost of this service. While sludge pumping costs around 12,000 rubles in the Moscow region, using vacuum equipment will cost around 18,000. Furthermore, the distance to the site is also important – outside the Moscow Ring Road, each kilometer will cost 30-50 rubles.

Frequency of sewage pumping in a private house

Regardless, septic tanks need to be emptied from time to time. The frequency of this procedure depends on several factors:

  1. The capacity of the storage tank. The smaller it is, the more frequently cleaning is required. According to SanPiN requirements, a cesspool or septic tank must be cleaned at least once every six months, but larger tanks can be cleaned less frequently. This requirement applies to families of 3-4 people. Cleaning is mandatory when the septic tank reaches 75% of its maximum capacity.
  2. Frequency of use of the sewer system, depending on the number of users.
  3. The material used to form a drainage system. This refers to its filtering capacity. As the sludge layer accumulates, the filtering capacity of any filtrate decreases.
  4. A variety of bacteria used for wastewater treatment—anaerobic and aerobic. The use of this material and processing method increases the speed of wastewater treatment by tens of times.
  5. Aeration of wastewater to accelerate oxidation processes.

The use of bacteria for processing sewage, in addition to speeding up the process, increases the fluidity of the substance, due to which the process of its filtration takes place - The article provides detailed information about bacteria for septic tanks and cesspools..

While complete wastewater treatment is impossible, using a local treatment system can achieve 98% purification. This water can be safely used to water your garden, wash your car, or for other technical purposes. Naturally, this treatment comes at a cost, as it uses electric pumps.

However, there is currently no plant in the world that can operate without periodic cleaning. Even the most advanced treatment plants require periodic desludge removal.

The frequency of such an event, depending on the intensity of use, is 3-7 years and consists mainly of removing sludge from the bottom and walls of the septic tank.

It's worth noting that septic tank sludge is an excellent fertilizer for gardens. Various mechanical or hydromechanical cleaning equipment is used to remove scale from the walls of wastewater treatment pipes.

In terms of labor intensity, cleaning a septic tank cannot be compared with cleaning a cesspool.

Tips and recommendations

When determining the design of a sewerage system in a private home, it is necessary to take into account a number of factors, including soil characteristics and the hydrogeological conditions in the area where the home is located:

  1. If the subsoil is clayey, wastewater filtration is virtually impossible, requiring a solution to divert the runoff over a significant distance. On such soils, leachate filter fields must be installed.
  2. The design of a cesspool must prevent runoff from entering the ground, where it can easily penetrate the surface aquifers, contaminating the groundwater. This is taken into account in the SNiP requirements, which stipulate that water intakes (wells or wells) be installed no closer than 20 meters from bathhouses, laundries, or toilets.
  3. When using bathrooms in a country house, avoid putting paper, much less newspaper, into the toilet bowl. They can clump and create problems when cleaning septic tanks.
  4. Even the most advanced wastewater treatment system doesn't relieve the user of the need for periodic cleaning. Sewage systems without pumping don't exist.
